Local Heroes Shine: Recap of USMS 2-Mile National Championships at Chris Greene Lake

In an exhilarating showcase of endurance and talent, the 2023 US Masters Swimming (USMS) 2-Mile Cable Swim Championships took center stage at Chris Greene Lake this year, offering spectators a thrilling spectacle of aquatic prowess. The event not only drew widespread attention for its picturesque locale but also for the remarkable display of skill from both participants and volunteers alike.


With the event unfolding in our very own backyard, the local community rallied behind the competition with fervor. A testament to this support was the remarkable turnout, as both swimmers and volunteers flooded the scene, eager to be part of the action. Their collective enthusiasm set the stage for an unforgettable championship.


A total of 15 swimmers from our community took to the water, showcasing their dedication and determination. Among them, a trio emerged as true stars of the event, etching their names in the annals of swimming history.

Josh Hayes, John Aversa, and Shirley Loftus-Charley emerged as the cream of the crop, each securing the prestigious title of National Champion in their respective categories. Their remarkable performances left onlookers in awe as they powered through the water with unwavering resolve.


However, Shirley Loftus-Charley's accomplishments didn't stop there. In a feat of sheer excellence, she shattered expectations by not only clinching the National Champion title but also setting a new national record, solidifying her status as a force to be reckoned with in the swimming world.
