Local Athletes Make Their Mark in Outdoor Events

Pandemic restrictions have limited indoor pool swimming competitions for Brooks Family YMCA masters swimmers for months. But three talented Y athletes demonstrated their athleticism by competing in recent outdoor swims and triathlons.



On June 6th, Kate Lucas (50-54 yr age group) competed against 41 participants in the Motus Knoxville Triathlon held at Ijams Nature Center (Mead’s Quarry). She placed 2nd Overall Female a 1200m Swim (19:35), 15.4 mile mountain bike (2:26:16) and 4.6 mile run (54.53) for a total time of 3:43:39.



Along with 1,547 competitors, Roxanne Wegman took on the Inaugural Ironman 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge race in Roanoke on June 6. She placed 3rd in the 30-34 age group and was 9th overall female. Her 1.2 mile swim (36:41), 56 mile bike (2:56) and 13.1 mile run (1:40) with an overall time of 5:21:1, qualified her to compete in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in St. George, UT on September 18.



Jay Kauffmann swam along with 119 competitors in the Luray Swimfest at Lake Arrowhead on June 19th. Jay scored three 1st place finishes in the 750m (11:02), 1500m (23:19), and 2250m (36.27) events. He was 7th overall in the 1500m race.
